So, telling the story of a famous historical figure through the viewpoint of his or her pet is apparently a huge thing in kid literature. A great companion to the more detailed accounts of the expedition written for kids (the best of which by far is Rosalyn Schanzer, "How We Crossed the West: The Adventures of Lewis and Clark").
This title is different in focus, and for a younger age group, than Gail Langer Karwoski's Seaman (Peachtree, 1999) and more readable than Roland Smith's The Captain's Dog (Harcourt, 1999). There are beautiful illustrations and I truly like that each chapter is actually a excerpt from Lewis's chronicle which is quoted at the end of each chapter.

The thing about the book that really made me happy is that it was such a good period in time and it is such a good consept to know about, that now I know a lot about Lewis and Clark even though it is the dog narorating the book. It's the first-person (first-dog?) I brought this for our Grandkids and the fact my husband and I love Lewis and Clark. I have a generally low opinion of historical fiction for children -- because most of it is such low quality.

This is an absolutely delightful read! of an animal will pull any 6 year old like myself in, like maps in a book -- (see My Father's Dragon) It didn't provide much in terms of actual history or tracking of the Lewis and Clark Trail (my mom was hoping for more of that) but really as a 6 year old I didn't mind. We have a Newfoundland and I had to share this with my son. Tall Tale. It was more on some of the highlights from the dog's p.o.v.

They both liked hearing the real journal entries from Lewis at the end of each chapter. From his first meeting with Lewis, to being mistaken for a bear by Indians who have never seen such a large dog, Seaman's tales are filled with adventure and are based on the explorers' journals.

Seeing the expedition through the dog's eyes was wonderful, and the actual notes from Lewis' journal were an excellent addition. The idea that it is told from the p.o.v. the territory west of the Mississippi River, Lewis is looking for a dog to accompany the expedition. Be the first to ask a question about Lewis and Clark and Me. I recommend that you go to your local library and check out a copy. We liked the book.
