From this mid catchment section, the river then enters an urbanised area around the town of Dumfries, the largest town in South West Scotland. The valley’s upper end lies along the border with Ayrshire, where the Nith flows through a gap in the Southern Uplands. There is some parking at the river or there is a large free car park in the centre of town. It rises in East Ayrshire, flowing largely through Dumfries and Galloway before entering the Solway Firth at Dumfries.
The River Nith is Scotland's seventh longest river.
